Given :

  • A bag contains 3 red, 3 white and 3 green balls.

Have to Find :-

  • What is the probability of drawing

(a) red ball. (b) green ball

Solution :-

Let's find out total number of outcomes → 3 + 3 + 3 ⇒ 9

Now,

1) Probability of drawing a red ball

No. Of favourable outcomes / Total number of outcomes

  • Fav outcomes → 3

  • Total no . → 9

  • P(E) of red ball ↬ 3/9 = 1/3

2) Probability of drawing a green ball

No. Of favourable outcomes / Total number of outcomes

  • Fav outcomes → 3

  • Total no . → 9

  • P(E) of green ball ↬ 3/9 → 1/3

Probability - Probability refers to the uncertainty, chance or the possiblity.

  • Elementary Events - An outcome of a random experiment is called an elementary event.

\impliesFor Example - Tossing a coin.

  • Getting Head
  • Getting Tail

  • Compound Event - An event associated to a random experiment is a compound event if it is obtained by combining two or more elementary events associated to a random experiment.

\impliesFor Example - Throwing a dice :

  • Getting an even number.
  • Getting a odd number.

  • Occurrence of Event - An event A associated to a random experiment is said to occur if any one of the elementary events associated to the event A is an outcome.

\impliesFor Example - Let a dice be rolled.

  • Getting a number greater than or equal to 2.
  • Getting a number less than or equal to 5.
