Question

A bag contains 3 red balls and 5 black balls. A ball is drawn at random from the bag. Find the probability that the ball drawn is

1) red and

2)not red

Answer

Probability of any Event, P(E)

 = \dfrac{Number \:of \:favourable\: outcomes}{Number \: of \: total \: outcomes}

Number of red balls = 3

Number of black balls = 5

Number of total outcomes = 3 + 5 = 8

1) Number of favourable outcomes = 3

P(red) =  \dfrac{3}{8}

2)Number of favourable outcomes = 5

P(not red) =  \dfrac{5}{8}
