The probability of not a blue ball is 3/4 and the probability of either blue or yellow is 1/2.

Given:

  • A bag contains a red, a blue, a yellow and a white ball all of the same size.

To find:

  • What is the probability that the ball drawn at random (i) is not a blue ball?
  • (ii) is either blue or yellow?

Solution:

Formula to be used:

Probability an event

P(E) = \frac{ \text{Favourable Outcome}}{ \text{Total Outcomes}} \\

Step 1:

Find the probability of not a blue ball.

Total balls in bag:4

Not a Blue ball :3

Let the probability of not ab blue ball is

\bf P(\bar B) = \frac{3}{4} \\

Step 2:

Find the probability of either a blue or yellow.

Probability of choosing a blue ball

\bf P(B) = \frac{1}{4} \\

Probability of choosing a yellow ball

\bf P(Y) = \frac{1}{4} \\

Let the probability of selecting either blue or yellow is

P(BY).

P(BY) = \frac{1}{4} + \frac{1}{4} \\

\bf P(BY) = \frac{1}{2} \\

Thus,

Probability of not a blue ball is 3/4 and probability of either blue or yellow is 1/2.
