A bag contains in all 80 balls. Some of them are white, some
le and some are red. The number of white balls is 12
times the number of blue balls. The number of red balls is
less than the number of white balls but more than the number
of blue balls. If one ball is selected at random from the bag,
what is the probability that it is red?

  • Assuming x= number of blue balls
  • 12x= number of white balls
  • x<number of red balls<12x
  • number of red balls=kx (divide x on both sides)
  • x<kx<12x   1<k<12
  • Now, 12x+x+kx has to be divisible by 80 and it cannot be greater than 80.
  • 13x+kx=80
  • x(13+k)=80 x=80/(13+k)
  • Replacing k with the inequality gives us a range for x:
  • 80/14<x<80/25
  • But, as x has to be a whole number, x can only be 80/16 or 80/20 and so k =3 or 7
  • So x is 4 or 5.
  • So probability =28/80 or 15/80.

=> 14B < 80

=> B ≤ 5

from Both B = 4 , 5

Red Balls = 80 - 13B   = 28   or  15

Red Balls are  more than 20

=> red Balls = 28

Probability that it is red =  28/80
