Question:

A bag has 4 red balls and 2 yellow balls (the balls are identical in all the respect other than the colour). A ball is drawn from the bag without looking into the back. What is the probability of getting a red ball.

Answer:

Probability of getting a red = 2/3 .

Note:

If we consider;

E = set of favourable outcomes

(or favourable events)

n(E) = no. of favourable outcomes

S = set of total outcomes

( sample space )

n(S) = no. of total outcomes

Then,

The of probability of getting favourable outcomes is given by;

P(E) = n(E)/n(S)

Solution:

Here,

Getting a red ball is favourable event .

Thus ,

Let , E = event of getting a red ball

Thus,

=> n(E) = total no. of red balls

=> n(E) = 4

Also,

=> n(S) = total no. of ball in the bag

=> n(S) = 4 + 2

=> n(S) = 6

Thus,

The probability of getting a red ball will be given as;

=> P(E) = n(E)/n(S)

=> P(E) = 4/6

=> P(E) = 2/3

Hence,

The probability of getting a red ball from the bag is 2/3 .
