Answer:

Total marbles = 5 + 8 + 4

= 17

Marbles without purple ones = 5 + 8

= 13

Probability of not getting purple marbles = 13/17 (Simplest form)

Answer:

The probability of not getting a purple marble is 13 / 17.

Step-by-step-explanation:

There are three different coloured marbles in a bag.

Number of white marbles is 5.

Number of red marbles is 8.

Number of purple marbles is 4.

∴ Total number of marbles = 5 + 8 + 4

n ( S ) = 17

Now, let A be the event that the marble taken randomly is not purple.

∴ A = { W₁, W₂, W₃, W₄, W₅, R₁, R₂, R₃, R₄, R₅, R₆, R₇, R₈ }

n ( A ) = 13

Now, we know that,

Probability of not getting purple marble = [ n ( A ) / n ( S ) ]

⇒ Probability of not getting purple marble = 13 / 17

∴ The probability of not getting a purple marble is 13 / 17.

Additional Information:

1. Probability:

Probability means the possibility of happening a certain thing.

2. Random Experiment:

An experiment conducted to knwo the possibility of a particular event is called as random experiment.

3. Event:

The result of the random experiments is called as event.

4. Sample Space:

The set of all possible events for a random experiment is called as sample space.

5. An event is a subset of a sample space.

6. Formula for probability:

Probability of an event = [ ( Number of favourbale outcomes ) / ( Total number of outcomes ) ]

If A is an evnet, S is sample space, then the probability of the event A is -

  • P ( A ) = [ n ( A ) / n ( S ) ]

7. The probability of any event is always between 0 - 1.

8. Probability can be expressed in a fraction or in percentage.
