A balcony attached to a building is in the shape of a trapezium. The side not
attached to the building is parallel to and double the side attached to the
building. If the area of the balcony is 18 m- and the distance between the two
parallel sides is 9 m, find the length of the side of the balcony not attached to
the building

Let the 1st parallel side (side attached to the building)be x.

therefore 2nd parallel side(side not attached to the building)=2x

Area of trapezium=1/2×hieght×(sum of parallel sides)

18=1/2×9×(x+2x)

18×2/9=3x

4/3=x=1.33 m

side not attached to the building=2x=2.66m
