A ball is at rest released vertically from a height h from the ground.
We have to find the maximum velocity of the ball.
solution : initial velocity of the ball, u = 0
let final velocity of the ball = v
vertical distance covered by the ball, s = -h
acceleration acting on the ball, a = -g
using formula, v² = u² + 2as
⇒v² = 0² + 2(-g)(-h)
⇒v = √(2gh)
Therefore the ball exhibits maximum velocity just before reaching the ground and that is equal to √(2gh).
