A ball is dropped freely from a bridge into a river. It takes y seconds for the ball to reach the water surface in the river, calculate the height of the bridge from the water surface. Also calculate the velocity with which the ball strikes the water surface. Take g= 9.8 m/s

Given :

Time taken = y

u = 0

g = 9.8m/s

To find :

a) The height of bridge

b)Velocity with which ball strikes the water

Solution :

  • As the ball is falling freely The acceleration due to gravity of the ball would be g
  • a)From equations of motion

           S = ut +(1/2)at²

           By substituting the values

           S = 0+(1/2)(g)y²

           S=(1/2)gy²

Distance of water surface from the bridge is (1/2)gy²

  • b) v=u+at

            By substituting the values

            v = 0 + gy

            v=gy

The velocity with which the ball strikes the water surface is  gy
