QuestioN :

A ball is dropped from a height of 10m. If 40% of its energy is lost on collision with the earth then, after the collision the ball will rebound to a height of:

GiveN :

  • height = 10m.
  • 40% of its energy is lost on collision with the earth

To FiNd :

  • the collision the ball will rebound to a height of:

ANswer :

The ball will bounce back to a height of 6m.

SolutioN :

Given That The Ball Is Dropped From A Height, h₁ = 10m

Potential Energy At h₁ = mgh₁

Therefore The Potential Energy At h₁ = m × 10 × 10 = 100mJ

On striking the ground level, the ball looses 40%of its initial energy:

i.e. \sf \dfrac{40}{100}\times 100 mJ= 40 mJ

The energy left on striking the ground = 100mJ - 40mJ = 60mJ

So the final energy of the ball, mgh₂ = 60mJ

i.e h₂ = \sf \dfrac{60}{10}= 6 m

∴Hence, the ball will bounce back to a height of 6m.
