Start with d = (at^2)/2, with a = 9.8m/s^2. Assuming no air resistance, and knowing that it began with no velocity.

So the total distance to fall would be d = 4.9 (5)^2 = 122.5 m.

The distance fallen over 3 seconds is given by s = 4.9 (3)^2 = 44.1 m.

So after being stopped at 3 seconds, the ball has (d - s) = (122.5 - 44.1) m = 78.4 m left to fall.

So now solve for the time taken to fall 78.4 m, and you got your answer!
