A ball is given a velocity 2 m/s and is subjected to acceleration 4 m/s2 perpendicular to the initial direction of motion. What is its displacement after 2 seconds?

Answer:

In the horizontal direction it is projected woth a velocity of 2 m/s.

Therefore in 2 seconds it wouldve travelled a distance of 2 m. Therefore its displacement is 2 m.

In the vertical direction it is getting accelerated initially its velocity is 0 in the vertical direction, therefore distance travelled by it would be s = 0 + 1/2 × 4 × 2² = 8 m.

Thus the net displacement is the vector sum of individual displacements.

Net displacement = √(8² + 2²) = √68 m and it wouldve taken a parabolic path in reaching that place.
