Maximum range is obtained for a projection angle of 45°. At the highest point the ball has only the horisontal component (ucos45°=u/√2) of the initial velocity. Conservation of energy gives:
mu²/2=m(u/√2)²/2+mgh
u²=u²/2+2gh
2gh=u²/2
h=u²/(4g)
mu²/2=m(u/√2)²/2+mgh
u²=u²/2+2gh
2gh=u²/2
h=u²/(4g)
