Given:

A ball is thrown horizontally from a point "A" travels along a straight line and strikes the wall to a point "B" which is at a distance of 10m and rebounds to the same point "A" is 8 sec.

To find:

  • Average speed

  • Average velocity

Calculation:

Average speed is defined as the total distance divided by the total time taken to cover the distance.

 \therefore \: avg. \: speed =  \dfrac{distance}{time}

 =  >  \: avg. \: speed =  \dfrac{2s}{8}

 =  >  \: avg. \: speed =  \dfrac{2 \times 10}{8}

 =  >  \: avg. \: speed =  \dfrac{10}{4}

 =  >  \: avg. \: speed =  2.5 \: m {s}^{ - 1}

Average velocity is defined as the total displacement divided by the total time taken to cover that displacement.

 \therefore \: avg. \:velocity=  \dfrac{displacement}{time}

In this case , displacement will be zero because the starting and the stopping point of the object is same.

 =  > \: avg. \:velocity=  \dfrac{0}{8}

 =  > \: avg. \:velocity=  0 \: m {s}^{ - 1}

So, average speed is 2.5 m/s and average velocity is 0 m/s.
