A ball is thrown horizontally with a velocity of 5 m/sec from the top of a tall building. The ball falls through 44.1 m before hitting a vertical wall. the distance of the wall from the building is 5x

To find : the value of x.

solution : this question is based on concept of horizontal projectile.

see figure, here situation is clear.

h = 44.1 m , u = 5 m/s and g = 9.8 m/s

you should use formula, R = u√(2h/g)

= 5√(2 × 44.1/9.8)

= 5√(44.1/4.9)

= 5 × 3

= 15 m

but distance of wall from the building is 5x

so, 5x = R = 15 ⇒x = 3

Therefore the value of x = 3
