A stone tied to a string is whirled in a circle As it is revolving ,the rope suddenly brokes Then what happens ..

a) the stone flies off tangentially.

b) the stone moves radially inwards.

c) the stone moves radially outwards.

d)the motion of the stone depends upon its velocity.

answer : option (a)

solution : A stone is tied to a string is whirled in a circle as it is revolving the rope breaks then stone flies off tangentially.

when rope breaks , there is no centripetal force or centrifugal force acting on stone. The continues its motion due to inertia. and this motion is along tangent to the circular path .

and hence, stone flies off tangentially.

When a ball is tied to a string and whirled in a horizontal circle. When the string breaks the following things happen -

  • A body moves in a circular motion when the centripetal force act on the body inward which keeps the body moving in the circular path.
  • When the string is cut off, then there is no force on an object, it will travel in a straight line with whatever velocity it happens to have when the force is removed, or when the strings break.
  • The only reason it moved in a circle and not a straight line was that it was forced to do so which was by the string.
  • When that (string) force is removed, the object will move in a straight line with whatever velocity it happened to have when the force was removed.
  • So when the string breaks, the ball will move in a straight line.
