A ball of mass 2.0 kg is travelling at a speed of 12 m / s. It moves towards an object of mass 3.0 kg which is at rest. The ball hits the object and sticks to it. Which row gives the total momentum, and the speed of both objects immediately after the collision?

Answer:

4.8 m/s

Explanation:

Let momentum in first ball be pu

pu =mass(ball) * velocity(ball)

:. pu=2 * 12

=24 kg m/s

Now the ball hits an object of 3kg mass

Let final momentum be pv,

As the ball gets stock to the object total mass becomes 3+2=5kg

pv=mass* velocity

=5*velocity

According to law of conservation of momentum

initial momentum =final momentum

:. pv=pu

:. 5*velocity=24

so velocity=24/5 =4.8 m/s

:.velocity of the row immediately after collision is 4.8m/s
