A ball of mass 200 g and another ball of mass 300 g move towards each other with speeds of 12 m/s and 3 m/s respectively. If they stick to each other after colliding, what would be the magnitude of velocity of the combined mass after collision ?

Velocity of the combined mass will be 3 m/sec

Explanation:

Mass of first ball m_1=200gram=0.2kg

Velocity of second ball v_1=12m/sec

Mass of second ball m_2=300gram=0.3kg

Velocity of second ball v_2=-3m/sec ( opposite to first )

Now according to conservation of momentum

m_1v_1+m_2v_2=(m_1+m_2)v

0.2\times 12-0.3\times 3=(0.2+0.3)v

0.5v=1.5

v = 3 m/sec
