A ball of mass 5 kg moving at 3 m/s collides with another ball of mass 3 kg moving at 5 m/s in the same direction. If the balls move together after the collision in the same direction, find their common velocity.

Explanation:

total initial momentum = m1×v1 + m2×v2 = 2×3+3×0 = 6 kgm/s

momentum conserved, hence final momentum 6 = (m1+m2)×v; v = 6/(2+3) = 1.2 m/s

final kinetic energy = (1/2)(m1+m2)v2 =(1/2)×5×1.2×1.2 = 3.6 kgm/s

loss in kinetic energy = 6-3.6 = 2.4 kgm/s
