A ball strikes a bat with a velocity v. The ball has a mass m and after striking retraces its path. What is the impulse imparted by the bat?

Impulse is given by,

Impulse = FΔt

              =change in momemtum.

Initial velocity =v

As the ball retraces its path ,final velocity = -v

∴Impulse = final momentum - initial momemtum

              = -mv-mv

              = -2mv
