Circular Motion: Horizontal simulates the motion of a mass on a rigid rod that is moving along a horizontally-oriented circular path. It also explores the relationship between the inward force acting on an object traveling in a uniform circular motion and the object's mass, path radius, and speed.  If the string is under tension, the force of tension will always be towards the center of the circle. The forces on the object are thus: →Fg, its weight with magnitude mg. The tension is not perfectly horizontal, it's actually pointing slightly upwards. You certainly couldn't spin an object in a perfect horizontal string, because in such a string the tension would only pull the object horizontally and the unbalanced gravitational force would cause downward motion.
