A balloon collapses when air is removed from it . why does this happen?

It is because air inside the balloon occupies some space and when the air is removed from the balloon it collapses as there is no air inside the balloon, and also when air is removed from the balloon air exerts pressure....

Air pressure exists everywhere and acts in all directions. While blowing air into the balloon, We basically overcome this air pressure and apply more pressure through our lungs, when the balloon is tied, the air inside balances the pressure outside. However, when there is nothing to contain that pressure, air rushes out due to force being exerted on it by air.
