Mass of bag = 5kg
let t be the time 5aken to reach the earth

height, s = - 40 m (as download fall)
velocity at release, u= +10 m/s ( upward)

as, s = ut + 1/2 at^2
so,- 40 = 10t - 1/2 ×9.8 ×t^2.........as a= - g here
or,- 40 =10t -4.9t^2

so, the quadratic forms 4.9t^2-10t -40=0

by solving this we get,
t= 4.1 sec (approx)
