A balloon with mass M is descending down with an acceleration ‘a’, where a < g. What mass ‘m’ of its content must be removed so that it starts moving up with acceleration ‘a’?

Adding equation (i) and (ii),

Mg - F + F - (M-m) g = Ma + (M-m) a

mg = 2Ma - ma

mg + ma = 2Ma

m(g+a) = 2Ma

m = 2Ma/(a+g)
