Place the magnet horizontally, tie it to a string and hang it. You would observe that one pole goes up while one is down. So the one whichi is up is north pole and the ither one naturally is south pole

A free suspended bar magnet always come to rest in North - South direction. The north facing end of the magnet is its North pole, and the South pole facing end it is south pole
