We can find the poles of a bar magnet by suspending it freely by a string. A freely suspended bar magnet always comes to rest in the North−South direction. The north facing end of the magnet is its north pole, and the south facing end is its south pole.

When a bar magnet is suspended freely,it always rests in north - south direction. The end pointing towards north is called north seaking end or the north-pole and the end pointing towards south is called south seaking end or the south pole of the magnet . Usually north (N) and south (S) poles are marked on the magnet.
