Based on the reactivity series, the following observations will be made during the reactions:-

  • Silver spoon dipped in copper nitrate solution. No reaction will occur as silver is less reactive than copper. It lies below copper in the reactivity series and hence cannot displace copper from copper nitrate.
  • Magnesium ribbon dipped in aluminum sulphate solution. As Magnesium lies above aluminium in the reactivity series, it will displace the latter and form magnesium sulphate.
  • Iron nail dipped in copper sulphate solution. Iron will displace copper and form iron(II) sulphate as it is more reactive than copper.

Explanation:

In periodic table, elements with similar properties are classified in same groups. Chemical properties generally include the behaviour of elements to different elements and that is mostly dependant on the numbers of electrons in the last shell because these get involved in chemical reaction

Case 1;

No displacement as silver is less reactive than copper

Case 2:

Magnesium will displace aluminium as Mg is more reactive than Al

Case 3;

Displacement occurs leading to formation of iron sulphate
