a) The nature and concentration of a pollutant determine the severity of its detrimental effects on human health. Impurities released directly from the source of origin are known as primary pollutants, for example, CO2, SO2, NO.

b) Automobiles release large amounts of toxic gases by the burning of fossil fuels. These gases include carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides etc. These are green house gases which cause ozone depletion when released into atmosphere. Also these gases cause global warming.

c) Industries are responsible for four types of pollution – air, water, land, and noise pollution. Following are the various reasons: ... → Dumping of wastes especially, glass, harmful chemicals, industrial effluents, packaging, salts and other garbage render the soil useless.

d) The chemical agents that most pollute the air are: – Carbon Oxides: Carbon dioxide (CO2) and carbon monoxide (CO). ... – Sulphur oxides: Sulphur dioxide (SO2) and Sulphur trioxide (SO3). Sulfur Dioxide is produced from the combustion of coal or oil.

Answer:

ans a).Air pollutants are divided into two categories, based on their origin-primary and secondary.

Air pollutants are divided into two categories, based on their origin-primary and secondary.Primary air pollutants:

carbon monoxide, (CO), oxides of sulfur (SOx), oxides of nitrogen (NOx), hydrocarbons (HCs), radioactive compounds, pollen and bacteria are the major primary air pollutants.

ans b).When cars burn gasoline, they emit pollutants. Gasoline fumes escape into the air even when we pump gasoline into our fuel tanks.A car emits carbon monoxide when the carbon in fuel doesn't burn completely.

A car emits carbon monoxide when the carbon in fuel doesn't burn completely.A car's exhaust emits hydrocarbons, a toxic compound of hydrogen and carbon.

A car emits carbon monoxide when the carbon in fuel doesn't burn completely.A car's exhaust emits hydrocarbons, a toxic compound of hydrogen and carbon. When fuel burns, nitrogen and oxygen react with each other and form nitrogen oxides (NOx).

ans c). industries pollutes air by releasing several toxic gases in the atmosphere.

ans d) sulphur dioxide(S02), Volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
