Electrical contacts are fusedonto either side of thesemiconductor to enable an electrical connection to be made to an external circuit. The resulting electronic device that has been made is commonly called a PN junction Diode or simply Signal Diode.

Answer:

A basic semiconductor device is a diode. A diode consists of two terminals but current flows in only one particular direction.

A diode can be made up of semiconductor materials such as silicon. In such cases, the cathode is negative,i.e. has an excess number of electrons, whereas the anode is positive and has excess of holes.

At the junction of the cathode and anode there forms the depletion region that is devoid of any holes or electrons and is an insulating region.
