Answer:

99/5=19/5+65/8+x

-x=19/5+65/8-99/5

-x=152+325-792/40

-x=32

x=32

so the weight of brinjals is 32.

Concept:

  • Fractions
  • Addition and subtraction of fractions
  • Order of operations for fractions
  • Converting mixed fractions to improper fractions and vice versa

Given:

  • There are 3 types of vegetables.
  • Total weight of vegetables v = 19 4/5 kg = 99/5 kg
  • The weight of onions n= 65/8 kg
  • The weight of potatoes p = 19/5 kg

Find:

  • The weight of brinjals b

Solution:

The weight of onions and brinjals = Total weight - weight of potatoes

n+b = v - p

n+b = 99/5 - 19/5 = 80/5 = 16 kg

n+b = 16 kg

b = 16- n

b = 16- 65/8

b = 128/8 - 65/8

b = 63/8 kg

The weight of brinjals in the basket is 63/8 kg.
