A bat emits uttrasonic sound of frequency 100 K Hz in air.In this sound meets a watersurface. What is the wavelengths of (1)
reflected sound, (2) the transmitted sound?

Answer:

(a) Frequency of the ultrasonic sound, f=1000kHz=10^6 Hz

Speed of sound in air, V a =340m/s

The wavelength (λ r ) of the reflected sound is given by the relation:

λ r

=V/f

=340/10^6

=3.4×10^−4m.

(b) Frequency of the ultrasonic sound, f=1000kHz=10^6Hz

Speed of sound in water, V w=1486 m/s

The wavelength of the transmitted sound is given as:

λ r

=1486/10^6 =1.49×10^−3 m
