Given :  A batch of 50 transistors contains 3 defective ones. Two transistors are selected at random from the batch and put into a radio set.

To Find : What is the probability that only one is defective

Solution:

A batch of 50 transistors contains 3 defective ones.

=> Total = 50

Defective = 3

Non defective = 50 -3 = 47

2 transistors from 50 can be selected in  ⁵⁰C₂  ways

= 1225

Selecting one defective & one non defective

= ⁴⁷C₁³C₁

= 141

probability that only one is defective  = 141 / 1225

= 0.115

probability that only one is defective  = 141 / 1225 = 0.115
