Answer:

Let the average after 7th inning = x

Then average after 16th inning = x - 3

16(x-3)+87 = 17x

x = 87 - 48 = 39

Answer:

As we have average formula = sum of terms / number of terms

Here we have that player scored 87 runs in the 17th inning that means he had played 16th innings and first we have to get the runs scored in 16 innings

so we consider that average of player is X

as per Average formula = sum of terms / number of terms we can apply for runs

= sum of total runs scored till 16th innings / number of innings that is 16

X = sum total runs scored / 16

sum total runs scored = 16X

player scored 87 runs in the 17th inning

that means we have to add 87 runs in the total scored run till 16th inning so we get runs till 17th inning

( 16X + 87 ) ………………………………………………………………………………………………… (1)

So average till 17th inning would be

= sum of total runs scored till 17th innings / number of innings that is 17

= ( 16X + 87 ) / 17 …………………………………………………………………………………………….(2)

as per the statement in the question that player increases his average by 3 after 17th inning

so average would be

X+3 = ( 16X + 87 ) / 17 ………………………………………………………………………………….(3)

17X + 51 = 16X + 87

X= 36
