A batsman makes a score of 88 runs in the 17th inning and thus increases his averages by 3.Find his average after 17th inning?

Solution:-
Let his average after the 17th inning be 'x'
Then his average before the 16th inning = (x - 3)
Now, according to the question.
16(x - 3) + 88 = 17x
16x - 48 + 88 = 17x
40 = 17x - 16x
x = 40 
So, his average after 17th inning is 40
