A battery of emf 12 V and internal resistance 5 Ω is connected to a resistor. If the current

through the circuit is 0.3A, what is the resistance of the resistor? What is the terminal voltage

of the battery when the circuit is closed?

Answer:

emf = 12v

internal resistance = 5ohm

current pass through internal resistance is also 0.3A as internal resistance and other resistor are connected in series

voltage consumed by battery = 5(0.3) = 1.5V

terminal voltage = emf - voltage consumed by battery

terminal voltage = 12 - 1.5 = 10.5v

resistance of resistor = terminal voltage/current

= 10.5/0.3 = 35ohms

so

terminal voltage of the battery = 10.5v

resistance of resistor = 35ohm
