A beam AB of length 1 m is supported horizontally at A and B. A weight of 500 N is attached on the rod at C. If the support at A can not bear a pressure more than 300 N, find the distance of C from A, when the support A is about to fail.

Answer:

40 cm

Explanation:

Let distance of C from A = x, so distance from B = 1-x

Balancing torque at point B

500 (1-x) = 300( 1)

x = 2/5m = 40cm

Thus the distance of C from A is 40 cm.

Explanation:

We are given that:

  • Length of beam = 1 m
  • weight = 500 N
  • More weight = 300 N

Solution:

Let distance of C from A = x,

so distance from B = 1 - x

Balancing torque at point B

500 (1-x) = 300( 1)

x = 2/5 m

x = 40 cm

Thus the distance of C from A is 40 cm.
