Option C : Refractive index for R is greater than that of P and Q

Refractive Index :

  • Refractive index shows the measure of the bending of a light ray when it crosses from one medium to another.
  • It is denoted by the symbol "n"
  • It can be formulated using the angle of incidence "i" with the normal in one medium and the angle of reflection "r" with the normal in the other medium as :

                       n = sin(i)/sin(r)

In the figure given in the attached document, for the 3 rays (P, Q and R) the angle of incidence i.e. "i" is same.

Thus,

                     i_{P} =i_{Q} =i_{R}

                  sin(i_{P} )=sin(i_{Q} )=sin(i_{R} )

But the angle of refration in the given figure for the rays P, Q and R are different with the normal :

                  r_{P} = r_{Q} > r_{R}

                 sin(r_{P} ) = sin(r_{Q} ) > sin(r_{R} )

                 1/sin(r_{P} ) = 1/sin(r_{Q} ) < 1/sin(r_{R} )

                sin(i_{P})/sin(r_{P} ) = sin(i_{Q})/sin(r_{Q} ) < sin(i_{R})/sin(r_{R} )

                n_{P} =n_{Q} < n_{R}

Hence, the refractive index for the ray R is the greatest and the index for P and Q are smaller and equal.
