Explanation: Refractive index when angle of incidence and angle of refraction are given=sin i/ sin r. So given that sin i=45° and sin r=30. So refractive index of a substance==sin i =45°=1/√2 and sin r= 30°=1/2. So sin i/sin r=1/√2÷1/2=1/√2x2/1.

Which is now 2/√2=√2=1.414. Thus the refractive index of the required substance is 1.414
