Answer:

• This system of belief is called as Majoritarianism.

Explanation:

• We know that there are many countries in the world where many communities live together, they elect their governments together, and the governments are expected to take care of them irrespective of their numbers, or any minority status.

• But there are some governments or regimes which believe that the government should act in favour of the majority group in the country and the needs and requirements of the minority groups should be sidelined. This type of governments are called as Majoritarian governments.

• The best example of this type of government was the government of Sri Lanka.

• In 1956, the government of Sri Lanka passed as act which made provisions which favoured only one major community in the country, that is the Sinhala community or the people speaking Sinhalese language which comprised of about 74% of total population of Sri Lanka.

• But at the same time through this act the government has completely sidelined the needs and requirements of the minorities, the largest among them were the Sri Lankan Tamils.

• This widespread dissatisfaction among the Sri Lankan Tamils led to various protests and armed rebellions.

• As a result, the country was thrown to a disastrous Civil War in 1986, which lasted for about 26 years.

• Therefore, governments throughout the world should take lessons from the case of Sri Lanka and should make policies that are not discriminatory to the minorities of the country.
