A bicycle and its rider together weigh 66 kg, are negotiating a left turn though 600 along a circular arc shaped road of radius of curvature of 15 m with a uniform speed of 38 kmph. Diameter of the bicycle wheels is 0.75 m and mass moment of inertia of each wheel can be taken as 0.4 kg-m2. Centre of mass for the rider and bicycle can be taken at 1.1 m from the road surface. Determine the angle of heel for safely negotiating the turn.

Explanation:

The centripetal force acting on the bicycle is given by,

F

c= rmv 2

=

100

100×10×10

=100N

Required frictional force to cross the turn,

F

f=μmg

=0.6×100×10=600N

As the frictional force is greater than the centripetal force, so the rider will be able to cross the turn
