time =  \frac{distance}{speed}

Let the distance from A to B = X

Time required to cover A to B in 10 kmph = x/10

Time required to cover B to A in 8 kmph = x/8

Total time = 4.5 hr

 \frac{x}{10}  +  \frac{x}{8}  = 4.5

x = 20 \: km

Total distance covered by him = 2x = 40 km
