A big explosion on the moon cannot be heard on the earth because

the explosion produces high frequency sound waves which are inaudible

sound waves require a material medium for propagation

Let's assume that a big explosion has taken place on the surface of the moon. But , people on the earth surface will never be able to hear that explosion because of the following reason :

  • Sound is a longitudinal pressure wave propagated through a media due to to vibration of the particles along a direction parallel to the propagation of the wave.

  • So , we can say that sound definitely requires a material medium to propagate.

  • Now , the space between the moon and the earth surface doesn't contain any material medium through which sound waves can propagate and that's the reason we are not able to hear the explosion.

  • But , we might be lucky to see the explosion because light waves being electromagnetic in nature do not require a material medium to flow and hence can pass through space and reach our eyes.
