Given : A biologist measured the length and mass of 20 reptile.

The equation y= 0.3x-2 is the line of best fit for the data

To Find : approximate length of a reptile that has a mass of 20.5 grams?

Solution:

x is the length in centimenters

y is the mass in grams.

y= 0.3x-2

mass of 20.5 grams

=> y = 20.5

=> 20.5 = 0.3x - 2

=> 22.5 = 0.3x

=> 22.5/0.3 = x

=> x = 225/3

=> x = 75

approximate  length in centimenters  = 75

Answer:

Equation y = 0.3x - 2 is the line of best fit for the data, where x is the lenth in centimetres and y is the mass in grams.

  • Mass of reptile (y) = 20.5 grams

⇒ y = 0.3x - 2

⇒ 20.5 = 0.3x - 2

⇒ 20.5 + 2 = 0.3x

⇒ 22.5 = 0.3x

⇒ 22.5 / 0.3 = x

x = 75 cm

Approximate length of the reptile is 75 cm.
