A bird flying in the same direction as that of the wind, covers a distance of 45 km in 2 hours and 30 minutes. But it takes 4 hours 30 minutes to cover the same distance when it flies against the direction of wind. ignoring conditions other than the wind conditions, find the speed of bird in still air and the speed of wind

As according to question the bird is flying 45kms in 2 hours and 30 minutes.
So ths speed of the bird in the direction of the wind=
As we know speed = distance÷time
so first change 2 hours and 30 minutes into minutes = 150 minutes
Means 45 km in 150 minutes
So in one minute = 45/150= 0.3km
And in one hour = 60×0.3=18kms
SO THE SPEED OF BIRD IN THE DIRECTION OF WIND IS 18 KMS / HOUR

Second condition is that the bird takes 4 hours and 30 minutes in the opposite direction..
Now birds speed in the opposite direction of the wind:-
Here 4 hours and 30 minutes = 270 minutes.
It means 45km in 270 minutes.
so in one minute= 45/270 = 0.1 km
And in one hour = 0.16×60 = 6 kms
SO THE SPEED OF THE BIRD IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION OF THE WIND IS 6 KMS PER HOUR .

» Let's the Speed of the bird in still Air = X km/h
» and the speed of wind = Y km/h
___________________________
» The Bird flies same direction then the speed will be = (X + Y) km/h
» The Bird flies opposite direction than the speed will be = (X - Y) km/h

» Distance = 45 km ____[GIVEN]
___________________________
=> Speed = Distance/Time
» according to question :-
=> X + Y = 45/2.5
=> X + Y = 18 _______[Eq(1)]

and
=> X - Y = 45/4.5
