A bird is flying at the height 3 m above the river surface while a fish is 4 m below the surface. At what depth would the fish appear to the bird ? At what height the bird would appear to fish ?

The expression for the refractive index in terms of apparent depth in air is as follows;

\mu =\frac{Apparent depth in air}{Real depth in air}

Put \mu=\frac{4}{3} and Real depth in air= 3 m.

\frac{4}{3} =\frac{Apparent depth in air}{3}

Apparent depth in air=4 m

The fish would see the bird at 4+4 = 8 m.

The bird would see the fish at 3 m + 4 m= 7 m.

Therefore, the fish would appear to the bird at depth of  8 m. The bird would appear to fish at the height of  7 m.
