He had total 9 birds in the bag in all.

Explanation

Suppose, the number of all birds in the bag is  X

Also suppose, the number of sparrows is  S , the number of pigeons is P and the number of ducks is D

There were all sparrows but six, all pigeons but six as well as all ducks but six.

All sparrows but six ⇒  S= X-6

All pigeons but six ⇒  P= X-6

All ducks but six ⇒  D= X-6

As the total number of birds is X, so the equation will be........

X=S+P+D\\ \\ X=(X-6)+(X-6)+(X-6)\\ \\ X= 3X-18\\ \\ 3X-X= 18\\ \\ 2X=18\\ \\ X=9

So, he had total 9 birds in the bag.
