Solution:

He took 10 steps of 80 cm = 10 × 80 cm = 800 cm

Convert 800 cm into 'm' by dividing with 100 = 800/100 = 8 m

After turning left or the right he took 40 steps = 40 × 80 cm = 3200 cm

Convert 3200 cm into 'm' by dividing with 100 = 3200/100 = 32 m

His displacement = √( 8^2 + 32^2 )

His displacement = √( 64 + 1024 )

His displacement = √1088

His displacement = 32.9848 m

Here, 32.9848 m is approximately to 32 m.

Answer: (b) 32 m

Thus, the maximum possible displacement of the person from his starting position could be 32 m.
