a block of mass is suspended by a light cord C from a ceiling and another strong cord D is attached to the bottom of the block. the cord D id pulled by a force F. which of these cords will break if, (a) force is increased steadily? (b) force is increased suddenly?​

(a) When the force is increased steadily, the cord C will break first. The reason is that on steadily increasing the force, the energy will gradually transfer to the cord C and therefore the tension in C will gradually increase.  This tension will always be more than the tension in D because the weight de to the block of mass m will also cause tension in the string C. Hence string C will break.

(b) When the force is increased sudenly, the sting D will break because this sudden increase in force will impart an impulse (Impulse = Ft) in the string. There would not be enough time of transfer of energy from string C to string D.  Thus, the string D will break first.
