A block of material with relative density 1/3 is submerged in water. It starts moving up with acceleration a. The value of a is 2g

Option (2) is correct.

Explanation:

Let the mass of the block be M

If the density of the liquid is \rho, the density of the block will be =\frac{\rho}{3}

Volume of the block

V= Mass/Density

\implies V=\frac{M}{\rho/3}

\implies V=\frac{3M}{\rho}

The volume of the liquid displaced will be V

The bouyant force will be equal to V\times \rho\times g

The net force on the block in the upward direction

F=V\rho g-Mg

\implies F=\frac{3M}{\rho}\times \rho g-Mg

\implies F=2Mg

Therefore, the net acceleartion in the upward direction

a=\frac{F}{M}

\implies a=\frac{2Mg}{M}

\implies a=2g

Hope this helps.
