A block of wood has mass 5kg, what is the density of the wood if the mass of water whose volume is half that of the block of wood is 2kg?

Let the Volume of the block of wood be 2V m3

Then the volume of the water is V m3. (half of 2V)

D=M/V

D(water)= M(w)/V(w)=

We know D(water) =1 kg/m3

Therefore

1 =2/V

V=2 m3

So Volume of the block of wood=2V= 4 m3

D(wood)=M(wood)/V(wood)

D=5/4=1.25 kg/m3 or 1250 g/cm3
